The Maine Loon Project, directed by the Maine office of the National Audubon Society, has worked for more than three decades to assess the status and safeguard the future of Maine’s loon population. Through this project, Maine Audubon works with over 1000 citizen scientists and partners statewide (e.g., Maine Lakes and Signs of the Seasons with Maine Sea Grant) to promote healthy lakes, clean water, and quality habitat for loons and to understand trends in their population over time. For the last two years several volunteers from Witney Pond, under the leadership of Gabi Mercier, have contributed to the annual loon count on the second Saturday in July. We would also welcome volunteers from Hogan to join us. The Whitney team has been able to successfully identify the loon pair each year during our survey that we routinely spot on the pond throughout the summer.
